O2 Leaks its Own iPhone 3G Pre-Pay Pricing

by admin on Jun.30, 2008, under Gadgets, Top Gadgets

Oops. O2 prematurely posted details of its UK Pay & Go plan, realizing the mistake soon after and pulling the page. Sadly, despite the amount of coverage this is getting, nobody thought to take a screen shot. Mac Rumors has, however, posted details of the tariffs, which look both reasonable and realistic.

The handsets will be £300 ($590) and £360 ($710). This price includes six months of unlimited data use. After that, it will cost you £10 per month for unlimited data, with various Pay & Go tariffs on top. These are typically arcane, and require a copy of both the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Rosetta Stone to decipher.

Dell Breaks Own Uglification Rules with New Studio Notebooks

by admin on Jun.30, 2008, under Gadgets, Top Gadgets

Dell Inspiron

See what you can do when you make an effort, Dell? You come up with a laptop we might want to buy. The new Studio has been announced, and aside from a range of mouth watering colors (on the lid, at least) Dell has sprinkled on a few tasty extras.

As ever with Dell, you have almost too much choice as to what goes inside, but the base models have 15″ and 17″ screens, Core 2 Duo processors with integrated graphics and the usual array of card readers, inbuilt webcams and ports. Prices start at a very reasonable $800 and $1000 depending on size

But it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and Dell is shipping the Studio line with a customized version of Vista, which adds and OS X style dock (pictured below). If you use a Mac, you’ll know the Dock. If not, it’s an application and document launcher. The Studio is looking like a nice alternative to the MacBook (assuming you don’t want OS X, of course).

The product page link below is the the German site — the US one doesn’t appear to be up yet.

Moto ROKR E8: Too Little, Too Late?

by admin on Jun.30, 2008, under Gadgets, Top Gadgets

Moto ROKR E8

Motorola’s new flagship phone, the ROKR E8, has finally arrived in the wild courtesy of T-Mobile.

The surprising thing is how poor the specs look in the post iPhone world. This is a flagship product? A 2MP camera, a pathetic 2GB of built in RAM (plus a bundled 1GB microSD card), haptic feedback and a music player.

But most telling is the list of what it doesn’t have. No touch screen (although the ’soft’ keys are touch sensitive and context-aware), no 3G (EDGE only!) and no accelerometers. Fine, you say, it’s cheaper than the iPhone, right? Wrong. T-Mobile is pushing the E8 for the exact same $200 that AT&T is charging for the 8GB iPhone. Not to get all pro-Apple here, but unless you really hate AT&T, why wolf you buy this instead of the iPhone?

Apple to Give Away Remote Control Application For iPhone

by admin on Jun.30, 2008, under Top Gadgets

Apple giving away remote control application.

The latest version of iTunes (7.7), which was yesterday sent early to developers, contains this nugget:

“Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later.”

“Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.”

That wording looks a little janky, with the ‘Touch’ in iPod Touch spelled with a small ‘t’, and some run on sentences, but maybe that’s just the transcription-monkeys over at Mac Rumors.

We’re guessing that this will work over your home Wi-Fi network in a similar way to the web-apps that already do this. Of course, being a native application, and being Apple designed, it should be a lot faster and slicker. We still can’t help wondering, though, when Apple will let us stream music direct from our iPhones to the Airport Express, cutting out the middle Mac entirely. C’mon guys. What’s stopping you?

Mitsubishi Releases Specs of the ‘Frakking’ Laser TV

by admin on Jun.30, 2008, under Top Gadgets

Mitsubishi LaserVue

According to the latest statement straight from Mitsubishi’s Japan headquarters, the new LaserVue TV will be available in monster sizes only, 65″ and 73,” and is supposed to come out in the first part of the third quarter later this year. That translates to the first couple of weeks of September, if you’re fixing your planner at home, or even if you’re alone.

Laser TVs have been anticipated for quite a long time, even as far back as the 1960s. But the cost and the semiconductor processing needed to power quality, consumer grade light engines was too prohibitive (check out the field of optoelectronics for more information). Only until recently, when companies like Novalux started showing their new semiconductor laser tech, did we think we’d see any significant improvements or an actual product.

The Mitsubishi LaserVue will include several interesting breakthroughs that could build it a nice niche (until the expected high prices fall, down the road).
